Congratulations to Jubilarian Award Winner Pattie Wong Heatherly!

The annual Maryknoll Alumni Luncheon was held on Saturday, July 23rd, 2016, at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.  Because it was our 50th Reunion, our Class of '66 had the spotlight.  In attendance were Wendell Konn, Linda Wong Kealoha, Dale McIntyre Lipton, Charlene Leong Santee, Susan Chong Wong, Luviminda Agpalo, Marie Wong Wagner, and Pattie Wong Heatherly.

During preparations for our reunion, requests were sent out for two things:  A vote for the individual who has given the most to his/her classmates and Maryknoll during the past 50 years (the Jubilarian Award), and, of course, donations for our Class Gift.

Pattie Wong Heatherly was presented with the Jubilarian Award for her unflagging service to Maryknoll over the past 50 years.

Our class gift of $12,000 was presented by Susan Chong Wong, to be used for a scholarship.

Here are some pictures of the event.  Many thanks to Linda Wong Kealoha and Marie Wong Wagner!!

Update: Linda Wong Kealoha

I graduated from UCLA in 1970 with a B.A. in Social Sciences for Elementary Teaching, then attended the UH to get my 5th Year Teaching Certificate.  Taught for the DOE for the next 32 years at Nanaikapono and Pearl City Elementary Schools, mainly in first, second, and third grades.  Retired from the DOE in 2003 to become a caregiver for my parents.

On a personal level, I married my husband, Abe Kealoha, in 1973.  Imagine, 43 years of marriage!  Moved to Mililani in 1975 and have lived there since.  We have two daughters and four grandchildren who bring us much joy.  I am currently a caregiver for my 96-year-old father.  This keeps me pretty busy, however when we have time, Abe and I enjoy traveling all over the world or to Seattle to visit our granddaughters.  My interests include playing golf, ballroom dancing, and  working out at 24-Hour Fitness (especially Zumba, yoga, and step classes).

Hope this isn't too long.  After all, 50 years is a long time to catch up on!

Update: Marlene Dias DeCosta

Marlene is has been working with the Diocese of Honolulu part time as its Director of Real Estate since 2009 after working in the  commercial real estate industry for then 24 years. She is “luckily married” (as she says) to Thom De Costa, an architect with the State of Hawaii at DOE for 42 years. They are very blessed to have two sons, Matthew, 38 and Todd, 34, married to Angela and together giving the family the gift of Isaiah, who will be turning two the weekend of our reunion.

Update: Brian Spitzer

We both retired last year, me from Government Service (DoD) and Olinda from a ICU/CCU Nurse/Nurse educator for 42 years.  Trying to get used to the transition from Colorado to Florida.  We are both looking forward to the reunion, my first "official reunion" and we are attending Olinda's 50th in Lima, Peru in May.

Update: Doris Schultz, now known as Angela Joy Chapman

Hi all! Was sorry to miss this year. Life definitely keeps me going with this family. Between grandkids, a husband with special needs, and church activities, life is full. Bless you all. I sure look forward to more pictures!

Seven grandkids and four children. Don't ask how many name changes.  Life is an adventure, right?  Here's my life in pictures.

From Frank Ocalvey

Sounds like you all will be having a good time.  Sorry I won't be able to attend.

Summer time is our time to bond with our children by traveling the world.  I'm the oldest I think in the class (69) with the youngest kids (13 &18).  I am trying to show them the 7 wonders of the world, but they keep changing.  Here are some of the places we have seen:  Taj Mahal, Pyramids, Angkor Wat, Everest, Machu Pichu, too many to mention (about 40 different countries).  We leave Wednesday and won't be back until August.

My son graduates tonight (Kamehameha) and we'll be going to Dartmouth to check out the college and then Brazil.  Maybe if you have something during the year  I could make it.  Have a great time.

All the best

Update: Dale McIntyre Lipton

I know you need an RSVP, so just put me down as a wistful “No thank You” to all the events.
My daughter, son-in-law and family have not been to Hawaii in more than 5 years.  They will be here (staying with us) June 3 – 13.

My husband and I will have just returned from a 2 week trip to visit other kids (Washington, D.C., Grand Rapids, MI and the Twin Cities, Minn), so I’m not even sure I can get vacation during June 3 – 13 to spend much time with them.

Base on that I’m sure you can tell I’m happily married and still working.  Five years ago I married Jensen Lipton.  Linda and Abe Kealoha know us as a couple from ballroom dance classes and I believe that Yuki knows Jensen professionally.   Between us Jensen and I have 7 children and 9 grandchildren.  Thank God -  everyone is doing fine.   There have been challenges (health issues with the grandchildren), but it’s all good.   I’m a VP and trust officer with Bank of Hawaii – fascinating work.  Life is good.  Maryknoll and my fellow students definitely contributed to my developing into a happy and productive person.  I’ll miss getting together this time, but hope there will be other opportunities.

Warmest aloha,
Dale

Update: Patricia M. Talbert

Aloha, Marilyn...it was amazing to see everyone during the two events I was able to attend.  Thank you so much.  And as I said, it was surprising that I remembered so many since I was only there for my senior year.  Please publish my contact information.

I spent many years on the mainland but the islands always brings us home.  I am a civil rights advocate, former special assistant/deputy attorney general, adjunct law professor, jurist and law partner. My smile time is with my family - two daughters and three mo'opunas.  I am practicing in Hawai'i, involved in native rights initiatives and enjoying the rainbow at the end of each day.  May we all be blessed!

Update: Tom Silva

After graduation, I attended the University of Hawaii in the Fall of 1966.

I volunteered for the United States Air Force following my freshman year and did my Basic Training with Tsune Nakago, whom you may recall from Maryknoll.  I spent four years doing intelligence work, first at the National Security Agency (NSA) and, later, in the Philippines at Clark Air Base in direct support of operations in Vietnam.  I returned to UH in September, 1971 and graduated in 1974 with a BA in Anthropology.

After graduation, I followed my passion and worked as an archaeologist for the Archaeological Research Center Hawaii on Kauai. I worked throughout the islands and in American Samoa, but passion eventually met with financial reality.  I leveraged experience gained in commercial diving and fishing while still in school and went to work for McWayne Marine Supply.  I travelled throughout Hawaii, the Pacific and Asia representing McWayne and U.S. Divers Company, the American branch of Jacque Cousteau’s company.   I was later hired as U.S. Divers’ Manager of Product Development in California, where I did R&D and product development on new SCUBA products and technologies in Europe and Asia.

In 1982 I began a 28-year career with Pacific Gas and Electric Company working in energy management.  Later, I focused on regulatory work and managed corporate relationships with major biotech, telecoms, energy, and petroleum industry companies in California. I retired in 2008, and began working for Chevron a week later.  It’s been eight years and I’m still doing the work I love.  I now focus on power generation, renewable resources and regulatory issues.

Along the way, I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, got married and raised a daughter.  My wife, Cindy, a USC graduate, is in her third term as an elected member of the Walnut Creek City Council; she has served twice as mayor. Our daughter, Katie, is married to a U.S. Navy helicopter pilot, Carson, and both are University of Washington graduates. They have a new baby daughter, Adelaide.

For fun, I’ve run the Honolulu Marathon, climbed Mt. Whitney with Jim Shelton and for many years I raced sailboats on San Francisco Bay. In 2004, I sailed from San Francisco to Hawaii in a small boat. I took up bicycling again in my fifties and have ridden in the French Pyrenees. Cindy and I love to volunteer and travel in our free time.

Update: Carl Takahashi

I'd like to update you on what's been happening in my life.  I also can't believe it has been 50 years since we graduated!

After high school I got my degree from UH Manoa and did some graduate work in social work.  I met my wife when we both worked at Salvation Army's Residential Treatment Program for Adolescents, and we have been married for 33 years.

I worked for Hawaiian Tel for 10 years while we started our family and she continued her education to get a Master's in Social Work.  I also got into glass blowing and ceramics at UH - gave up glass after too many burns, but have stuck with ceramics and still enjoy throwing on the wheel.

After I paid my dues at Hawaiian Tel, I left to pursue my interest in plants and got into the University to eventually get into the plant nursery.  We raised two sons and my wife went back to school again for her doctorate to become a psychologist.  Life was hard during those years, but we were happy and enjoyed our family life.

Now, both boys are on their own and it's back to the two of us again.  My wife retired early from her state job this year and is enjoying just doing her private practice part time.  I will be retiring this year too, and we hope to get started on our bucket list.

Please give my regards to everyone who remembers me.
